THE TRÆNA CHAIR

ABOUT THE TRÆNA CHAIR

Traena, a small, remote Norwegian island community is determined to thrive, and at the least to become less vulnerable. Today, Træna’s citizens are building a multi-purpose site that combines a museum, spa and sauna facilities and hotel accommodation. The Træna chair is built from all their stories- it is a people-inspired object, supporting the community’s efforts, promoting its projects, lifting up and empowering those who sit in it.

The steambent curves tell the story of Vikings and traditional boatbuilding, the treacherous sea routes and storm blown sails, the fisherfolk and tossing waves, prehistoric relics and extremes of Nordic darkness and light. It embodies the resilience of people who refuse to give up. It brings their stories of courage and determination to inspire other small communities throughout the world.
