Jan Gehl: The most important scale is the people scale. The city at eye level and at 5 kilometers per hour. For a PD course, I could indulge in one of my other interests namely urban planning. I made a proposal for the road next to the University buildings. It’s a road which doesn’t invite slow traffic like cycling. It’s character is no different from the Swedish through roads where you are allowed to drive at 80 km per hour. The challenge was to make small changes to the road so that drivers would realize that they had to limit their speed. And to create a more walkable and cycle able environment on such a scale that makes it attractive for not only motorist but is enjoyable for cyclists and walkers as well.
